action alert!
Every New Year's Eve, a terrified opossum is trapped in a clear box, dangled above a crowd of rowdy revelers, and dropped for "entertainment" in Brasstown, North Carolina.

Despite annual outcry from local animal lovers, every year, the town of Brasstown, North Carolina traps a terrified opossum in a clear box, dangles it above a crowd of screaming partiers, and drops it for entertainment. Now, North Carolina legislators have passed a bill explicitly legalizing this cruelty from December 26 through January 2.
Opossums are nocturnal, shy creatures who are terrified of humans and noise. Needless to say, when one is shut in a box and surrounded by fireworks, guns firing, people shouting and lights flashing, it panics. With nowhere to flee, it can only scrabble helplessly at the walls of its prison as it plummets toward the yelling throng.
Those who actually rescue and rehabilitate injured opossums in North Carolina, staying up all hours o f the night to feed and care for them, must carefully abide by laws dictating treatment of wildlife in the state. Yet all those regulations apparently go out the window when it comes to tormenting the creatures for the sake of a few minutes of amusement.
This disgusting practice must no longer be allowed to continue. Sign the petition to tell the NC Wildlife Commission not to issue a permit for future "Possum Drops."
