Support a cause: Sentencing Children to Death

Care2 Petitions Action Alert
action alert!
When Maria was 12 years old, she was kidnapped at gunpoint and taken to a home where she was held captive. To escape sexual slavery, Maria fled to the U.S. The Trafficking Victims Protection Reauthorization Act (TVPRA) keeps children like Maria safe and supported.

What Maria endured was a nightmare. She was beaten and raped almost daily, forced into prostitution, and subsequently became pregnant while held in slavery. She fled to the U.S. riding on top of trains to escape sexual bondage. Ask Senator Reid to protect unaccompanied children like Maria.

The TVPRA makes sure children like Maria are afforded basic legal advice and access to support and protects them from being trafficked. Since last October, the U.S. border patrol has apprehended more than 52,000 unaccompanied kids fleeing extreme violence from El Salvador, Guatemala, and Honduras.

New legislation could mean these children — who've fled violence and abuse, and who have nowhere else to turn — are deported back to their home countries without meaningful screening. This is effectively a death sentence. Sign the petition supporting protection, care, and rehabilitation for unaccompanied, persecuted children who've come to the U.S.

Support a Cause: 52,000 Lost Children Need Protection

Care2 Petitions Action Alert
action alert!
Children are fleeing extreme violence in El Salvador, Guatemala and Honduras to come to the U.S only to be thrown into detention centers. As people of conscience, we have to speak out against this atrocious human rights abuse.

52,000 children have fled extreme violence only to be stranded in detention centers at the Southwest U.S. border. Several of these children are unaccompanied and extremely vulnerable to human trafficking.

This is a humanitarian crisis and we can't let our government send these children back into harm's way.

From Honduras alone, an estimated 8,000 children flee every year. Honduras boasts the highest per capita homicide rate in the world with 90.4 murders per 100,000 people. It's not safe for a child in Honduras and it's no wonder that these innocent children are heading north by the thousands.

The solution from Congress: go on summer break and expedite these children's deportations without meaningful screenings. Sending these children back to extreme violence is an effective death sentence. These children need protection, not punishment.

Legal protections are already in place to ensure these children are afforded basic legal advice and access to support. Don't let the government ignore children's rights in an effort to bury the issue.

Stand up and demand protection for trafficked and persecuted children.

Support a Cause: to tell lawmakers to keep us safe from shootings

What Do Most Mass Shootings Have in Common? Domestic violence and mass shootings are closely linked. It's time to change our laws to to keep women, and all of us, safe.

Over one million women are the victims of domestic violence each year. All too often, this abuse escalates to murder, and guns are the weapon of choice when domestic abusers kill their partners.

All of us, each and every one, are directly affected by the lax laws which allow dangerous abusers to access guns. In fact, most mass shootings are tied to domestic violence incidents.

But we aren't powerless to stop the carnage. We can keep weapons out of the hands of abusers.

The Protecting Domestic Violence and and Stalking Victims Act would prohibit stalkers and all domestic abusers — spouses and dating partners — from buying guns. This legislation, currently in the Senate, needs our full support.

Together, we can put a stop to the senseless violence.

Tell your lawmakers: save women's lives!

Support a Cause: Does Air Pollution Cause Mental Health Issues?

We already know air pollution is bad for our lungs and aggravates asthma. New research shows it might also cause severe mental health problems.

In scientific studies, mice younger than two months old who were exposed to tiny particles of common air pollutants showed brain damage consistent with those affecting people suffering from autism and schizophrenia.

Ask the government to enforce stronger environmental laws to prevent mental health problems in babies.

The study suggests that air pollution might irritate the brain and damage cognitive functioning in human fetuses and babies, too. If air pollution could be a factor in juvenile mental problems, we must do all we can to keep kids healthy and protect their developing brains.

Send a message to the government asking our leaders to take action against air pollution.

Hospitals have been working tirelessly to improve the efficiency of their ERs and the patient experience within. They're also branching out to the community to open urgent care and community facilities so they bring care closer to home and reduce unnecessary trips to emergency rooms. All of this is so much harder when an astounding $24.5 billion has been cut from the budget in the last year. Ask Congress to stop playing games with our health care. Restore hospital budgets!

Every dollar cut is makes it more difficult for hospitals to keep ER wait times down. With each cut from hospitals' budgets, your quality of care and experience when you're sick, injured, and vulnerable suffers. Unforunately, it seems some of our representatives don't see the value in strong, efficient emergency rooms.

Sign the petition supporting America's hospitals and their efforts to give you the best care possible in the ER!

Four years have passed since oil from BP's Deepwater Horizon oil rig spread through the Gulf, dredging birds, sea turtles, and other marine life. It took two years, but the RESTORE Act finally passed, authorizing the RESTORE Council to clean up the Gulf. But any real work towards restoration has yet to begin in earnest.

Tell the RESTORE Council you want to see immediate action to heal the Gulf.

Impacts of the oil spill still linger today. Each day that passes without significant progress puts shared natural resources in jeopardy.

It's well past the time to restore the Gulf. Tell the RESTORE Council we need on-the-ground action now!

Support a Cause: Every Second Child

Care2 Petitionsite Action Alert
action alert!
Every second child in our world is living in poverty. These children are the most vulnerable people in the world, yet they hold the most potential to break the cycle of poverty.

14 year-old Jeanne has been left to care for her bedridden mother and her siblings after her father abandoned them. Living in a poor, rural town in Burundi, Jeanne lives in the dire situation that accompanies a life of poverty. Without real work from world leaders to guarantee basic human rights, there is little hope for her to break out of poverty. If we are going to break the cycle of poverty, then we must directly target children like Jeanne.

As you read this, Jeanne is struggling to feed and care for her family, meanwhile world leaders are preparing for the Post-2015 Development Agenda. There is a whole host of world development issues that leaders must account for. But don't let them forget about children like Jeanne. The most vulnerable children must be a top priority for the next development goals.

How can we break the cycle of poverty without protecting the rights of vulnerable children? We simply can't have sustainable development without first and foremost empowering children. A child can't grow up prepared to tackle the world's problems without access to proper health care, education, and food.

It is critical that we make sure that our leaders are focusing on the heart of the future of development — the children. Children are the future and the eradication of poverty depends on them. Stand up for vulnerable children and tell the U.N. to ensure that the world's children are accounted for in the Post-2015 Development Agenda.
