Living in a poor, rural town in Burundi, Jeanne lives in the dire situation that accompanies a life of poverty. Without real work from world leaders to guarantee basic human rights, there is little hope for her to break out of poverty. If we are going to break the cycle of poverty, then we must directly target children like Jeanne. As you read this, Jeanne is struggling to feed and care for her family, meanwhile world leaders are preparing for the Post-2015 Development Agenda. There is a whole host of world development issues that leaders must account for. But don't let them forget about children like Jeanne. The most vulnerable children must be a top priority for the next development goals. How can we break the cycle of poverty without protecting the rights of vulnerable children? We simply can't have sustainable development without first and foremost empowering children. A child can't grow up prepared to tackle the world's problems without access to proper health care, education, and food. It is critical that we make sure that our leaders are focusing on the heart of the future of development — the children. Children are the future and the eradication of poverty depends on them.
